PC member who made teacher kneel down .....
because teacher said daughter's frock was too short

It was reported yesterday of an incident where a teacher of Nawagaththegama M.V. was ordered to kneel down by a member of a provincial council. After that, the incident was reported to the police and UNFP member Sarath Kumara was taken into custody.

The reason for this is that the referred to teacher had warned a group of female students including the daughter of the said PC member for having worn short frocks.

According to a code of ethics relevant to the school in which manner the school uniform should be and that it should cover the knees by some inches specified. The teacher was one of the representatives of the Disciplinary Committee of the school and it was she who summoned those who violated this rule and warned them because it was a part of her duties.

Last Friday the teacher concerned had advised students who wore short frocks that the hem of the frock should be longer and the daughter of this PC member Mr.Sarath Kumara was embarassed because of the advice. She had conveyed this to her father.

The PC member who came to the school when it was over had begun displaying his powers and asked the teacher to kneel down in the presence of students, parents and teachers. After she had been asked to kneel down for about 5 minutes and had tried to get up, she had been asked to kneel down once more. Further, she had even been severely abused with the most obscene language.

The teacher had later told the media that she was ordered not to come to school thereafter and to apologise to his daughter. She also said that he scared her saying, "I can bring 300 people and destroy your house!" She further said that the PC member had even tried to assault her but that those around her had prevented it.

In this manner, she went on to say that her knees were bruised as a result of this and members of the staff had been watching all this in amazement.

After complaining to Nawagaththegama Police, The PC member Sarath Kumara was taken into custody at Andigama, Anamaduwa on Saturday afternoon. He was produced before Addl. Magistrate, Puttalam who instructed that he be remanded till 17th Monday.
