THREATENING POSTERS AGAINST PROSTITUTES IN NEGOMBO

Posters threatening throwing acid on Negombo prostitutes

     Posters showing that acid will be thrown at prostitutes is seen displayed at certain quarters in the town of Negombo. The posters say that prostitutes who indulge in such activities will have acid thrown on them.

    It is reported that rooms in certain eating houses which are functioning in the guise of restaurants in some streets in Negombo are supplied to prostitutes and for that reason alone the threat of prostitution is fast spreading. It is observed that many motor-cycles and cars are commonly seen picking up prostitutes who are operating publicly on both sides of those streets.

    Those who are aware of what is happening say that the Negombo Police take these prostitutes into custody and produce them in Courts according to the Vagrant's Act, and what these prostitutes do is to pay a small fine. However, they they later get back into the trade. It is reported that owners of eating-houses too are subjected to a small fine.

  It is therefore assumed that posters threatening them with acid has come up with the intention of frightening these prostitutes.
