Beruwala bus-train accident
A private bus in which were travelling a crowd of people returning after attending a funeral in Galle yesterday (20th Saturday) struck against a passing train when going across an unprotected railway crossing at Rockland Junction in Magalkanda, Beruwala at about 7.45 in the night. The train was bound towards Alutgama, and on contact, the front part of the bus was smashed and was dragged along to end up on the Colombo-Galle main road. While 25 were hospitalised after the accident, 4 of them sustained serious injuries and by now have been admitted to the Intensive Care Unit in Colombo. Since there were a number of casualties, police say that they had to be sent to Beruwala and Nagoda with the help of several vehicles.
It is reported that accidents have occured at this unprotected level crossing even previously.
