After failing in the commerce subject at G.C. O/L examination, determined Chanuka became the highest marks scorer in Commerce stream at the GCE A/L: in the entire district.
A student who failed in the Commerce subject at the GCE O/L examination had obtained 3 ‘A’s at the G.C.E O/L in the Commerce stream from the entire direct and had topped the marks list is reported from Puttalam. Chanuka Devinda had achieved this by sheer determination and with determination according to him anything could be achieved.
Chanuka Devinda had been a student of Joesph Vass Vidyalaya. In the GCE O/L examination had secured 4 ‘B’s, 2 ‘C’s 1 ‘A’ and had failed in the commerce subject.
Earlier he had decided to follow the maths stream for the A/L. While he was studying in that stream he had found it be difficult to follow the subjects. He had thought that he should forget the failure of his subject in Commerce at the GCE O/L and began to be more determined in studying the subject better and changed to follow the commerce stream at the A/L.
“I knew that I was weak in the Commerce subject. But I knew through determination I will catch up with the things I did not know and to enhance my knowledge in commerce. I started to study this subject hard..I got the fullest support from the school .I never went for tuition classes. The fear I had about the subject commerce was made to disappear in a few months. I attended for the tuition classes in Mathematics and Economic Science. What was thought he school I very closely followed. I never gave up my studying hopes. I went behind the teachers to obtain more knowledge
I had my own time table. I played cricket in the evenings and even watched television. I did not make the examination much of an issue .At my home I lived with father and mother and had younger brother. I had no pressure from them..They never made any rules for me. I lived the way I wanted. My mother, father and uncle ( Loku Thaththa) gave me the necessary determination.
I made a ‘bet’ with the home people that I will somehow go to campus. Yet I did not know that I could not become the first in the district. Before the beginning of the examination the subjects I had mastered and I felt it like ‘water’. I was at a stance that I would pass with high marks. I lived a normal life and even sent kites .Had a lot of confidence in the exam as it drew closer.
After the exam was over I was dreaming about the results. From the results I had topped with the highest marks in the entire district. From the entire Island I was ranked 74.I could not believe and was a big surprise to me.. This was owing to my sheer determination, which made me honestly very happy. The commerce subject which beat me, I was in turn was able to beat the commerce subject .I got a great feeling about it.
My ultimate goal is to become an Accountant.”
