WHY VIJAYA-MALANI SEPARATED?

What was the reason why Vijaya and Malani who were very much in love could not marry?

On a Valentine’s Day like today it should be a topic that has to be spoken about why the much loved couple in the silver screen of Sri Lanka Vijaya and Malani who were crowned as King and Queen did not marry. True that they madly in love. But the question is why they did not marry. The story is one that somehow needs to be told on a day like today vey appropriately. There is nobody then who did not know about the intimate love story. However the fate was such that Vijaya had to marry Chandrika while Malani married Lucky Dias.
But some much unexpected incident that occurred in the history at that time prevented them from getting married. It needs to be told the wedding had to be cancelled the previous day when all arrangements had been made. Some may be aware the reason for cancellation of the wedding. The reason only a few would know and recollect. It was because of the sudden demise of Jeevan Kumaratunga’s father, the brother of Vijaya Kumaratunga.
The prediction was made by an astrologer who had told that this wedding would not take place. Until Vijaya’s death he had made valiant efforts to search for this marvellous astrologer who gave a correct prediction. By recollecting all these memories a journalist Ananda Padmasiri had published a superb article to a newspaper which is appended below.........
Vijaya’s maiden film was ‘Hantane Kathawa’ while Malani emerged from the film ‘Punchi Baba’. However they initially portrayed roles as lovers in Timothy Weeraratna’s film ‘Me Deas Kumatada’. However the first film that was released was the film ’Harathadenama Soorayo’ produced by Niel Rupasinghe.at that time the tremendous tendency for the film producers to pick Vijaya-Malani to portray lead roles for their films. In that era the Vijaya-Malani were heart throbs of many cinema lovers and there was a terrific craze to view their films. They ultimately became true lovers in real life. It was a open secret for all cinemagoers
The climax of any love affair ends in marriage. Vijaya and Malini were dreaming of their marriage. Accordingly the two made arrangements and fixed a day for their wedding. The day was in the early part of the 1970 decade. Vijaya had stitched his wedding suit at a popular tailoring shop of a friend of his in Pettah. It was Vijaya who went personally to collect his wedding suit. After he got off his vehicle he climbed some steps which led to the tailoring shop. When he came down the steps to get into his car a person who was lying on to a parapet wall said Sir, and called him. The person was clad in a sarong and a shirt. Vijaya quipped from him why?
Sir can you show me your palm. He asked when he could make a prediction. Vijaya was willing. He showed his to the astrologer who after looking at the time said Sir you are going to marry? Yes Vijaya quipped. Sir you cannot get married tomorrow the answer the Astrologer told. As he told this Vijaya erupted to laughter and told are you mad. Having the wedding suit in his hands he sarcastically smiled.
The astrologer said although you smile jokingly you cannot marry Malani tomorrow and even afterwards. He pulled some money and tried to give the astrologer. He refused to accept it and reiterated by saying you cannot marry Malani. Vijaya once more quipped whether it is sure for you .In the event I cannot marry I will come in search of you and offer you a good present. The astrologer said you cannot marry tomorrow, I do not want presents. My prediction is correct and precise and it is a perfect prediction.
He gave the Astrologer on his back, got into his car and drove to his upstairs house at Polhengoda. While driving thinking what was said he could not stop laughing?when he got off his vehicle  and walked towards his house with his wedding suit, a person known to Vijaya came forward. He asked him why you have come here. He told Vijaya to inform you that Sidney Sir has expired. Sidney is Vijaya’s elder brother and Jeevan Kumaratunga’s father.
Vijaya was shocked and it came to his mind what the Astrologer said a few hours ago. Vijaya knew that his prediction was true the wedding had to be cancelled. He took his wedding suit along with him to his Kandana residence. The suit was handed over to worn on to his deceased brother’s corpse. The prediction of the Astrologer always came to his thoughts. After the funeral and the almsgiving was over he returned to Polhengoda and went is search of that Astrologer in Pettah. The man was not there. Nobody around were not aware of such a person. For a number of days Vijaya tried to locate him but his efforts proved futile.
As predicted by the Astrologer Kovilage Vijaya Anthony Kumaratunga could not marry Wasniarachchige Malini Senehalatha Fonseka on the day the wedding was fixed. In the same year in 1977 Vijaya had to marry Chandrika Kumaratunga. Vijaya made every effort to find the Astrologer for a period of about 15 years after his marriage until his death but could not find him.
This story was related many times by Vijaya to his friends from time to time. He came to a conclusion that it would have been his brother who died a few hours earlier who may have come as his ghost to give him the message. After the marriage to Chandrika, Vijaya entered politics. His beloved mother Clara Beartice Kumaratunga had added that if Vijaya married Malani he would have not died. He was shot dead leaving a note “waradata danduwama’.
