During the budget debate M.P Harin Fernando had shown a half a loaf of bread valued at Rs 25/- to the house
While the budget debate was in progress when the increase of salaries to Government servants was debated, Member of Parliament for the United National Party, Harin Fernando quipped that for the Government servants salary had been increased by a sum of only Rs 750/- for a month.
While saying it he had pulled out a half a loaf of bread which was under his chair and shown it to the House and told that it is valued at Rs 25/-.He went on to say the Government servants could only purchase an extra half a loaf of bread with this increase for a day during the month.
In retaliation a Junior Minister Sarath Kumara Gunaratna had told it would have been more appropriate and appreciated if a piece of manioc or a sweet potato was shown.
