The death of the Undergraduate at Matugama
First it had been said that her death had been owing to drowning and it had been changed later had led it to be suspected:
Lance Corporal Husband had said: “You die because I have another girl friend”-
Recently we heard the death of a newly married Undergraduate from Matugama. First the medical and the post mortem report said that she had fallen into the well and died suddenly. Later it was reported that this well they had referred to is only five and half feet deep and it had been not in used for a long time. Then the question as to whether a person who is also five and half feet tall can die by falling into a well which is not that deep had arisen.
When the girl had died, she had been living with her mother- in -law and her husband at her husband’s house. They too have certified that it had been a sudden death. The girl’s mother had been hospitalized when she had died. Her mother had suspected that there should be another reason behind this death due to something her daughter had told her the previous day. Her mother had reported that her daughter had told her how her newly wedded husband scolded her saying: “You die because I have another girl friend”. Her husband is Ranganath Prasanga who is working in the Army as a Lance Corporal.
Irosha who had died is from Matara, Kamburupitiya. She had been reading for an external degree at Jayawardanapura University. She had been married in May from a proposal brought to her by her father. Her father had been working at Horawala in Mathugama. It is said that her father and Lance Corporal’s mother had been very good friends.
Irosha’s father had been working at Nilakolawatte, Horawala in Matugama. He had got to know Lance Corporal Ranganath Prasanga’s mother, Padma Sriyani who had been residing at Allanamulla, Matugama.
In between, they have proposed Ranganath Prasanga to Irosha who had been 28 years old, external undergraduate at the University of Jayawardanapura. She had been Corporal’s wife only four months ago.
Since, Irosha had been the only child, her mother had cried thousand times for her loss as she had gone to live at her husband’s house in Horawala. That had been mainly because her daughter had cried in every telephone call she had made. It was said that Ranganath had got 6-7 days leave per month to visit his home. Ranganath had come home on the 29th of last month to attend one of his friend’s mother’s funeral.
He had reported the Police that while he had been watching the cricket match on TV his wife had gone to bed early. He had also said that she has asked him to wake her up at 6 and in the morning he had found that his wife had been missing. Then they have started looking for her with the help of the neighbors and they have found her fallen into a well.
Ranganath had taken her out of the well and taken her to Wettewa Hospital but it had been found that she had been already dead before she had been admitted. The body had been sent for an autopsy. Judicial Medical officer N.N.L Jayasinghe’s conclusion was that her death had been due to drowning in the well. Post mortem report too had agreed with the medical report.
Since, Irosha’s mother had been a heart patient; she had been hospitalized at Wettewa hospital until the post mortem had been done. Thus, she had not been able to say anything regarding the death. Her relatives had asked for permission to have the funeral as soon as possible due to the condition of Irosha’s mother.
Irosha’s mother had been suspecting how her daughter who had been five and half feet tall could die after falling into a well that too had been same as her height. Thus, as soon as she had been discharged, she had gone straight to the Welipanna Police station and revealed what her daughter had told her the day before. She had requested to carry out further investigations on the death as she suspects her sudden death. Accordingly, Mathugama Magistrate had ordered Welipanna Police station to go to the house where the dead body had been kept and to take it to Colombo for autopsy. Another post mortem will be conducted on the 9th of this month.
The witnesses had reported that they have seen her dead body floating on the water in the well and the Police had been able to find out her mobile inside the well. It is so weird that she had gone to well in the early morning when she had water pumped into her house and anyway, that well had been one which had not been in use for a long time. Even if she had fallen into the well, how come she didn’t fight with the death to save her life?
It is expected that the Police can find more details as to whom she had called before her death and the post mortem will reveal how she had died.
