RUWANWELLE SOBITHA”S RAPE CASE

The girl who was subjected to rape , gives evidence in kegalle courts:

The story of a Buddhist Monk in the pretext of an expert charmer, given wide publicity had over a telephone conversation netted a  girl ,who was raped made a huge uproar in the country and in particular by the people of Ruwanwella who cordoned his premises in anger is known to many. However after disrobing he had happily continued his fake charming business by fooling many people. Last week he was arrested by proving him guilty of raping a girl two years ago.
He had raped another girl in the year 2005 under the pretext of finding her a job. This case was taken up at the kegalle courts the day before yesterday. During the proceedings it revealed that Ruwanwelle Sobitha had given accommodation to this girl and the Aunt and uncle who accompanied her in his own premises. Afterwards he had slept in the same room while the girl was crying the whole night while seated on a chair in the same room. According to the girl he had crept into the room, frightened her with some weapon like object and raped her amidst her cries. This was revealed in courts by the plaintiff.
She said the then Ruwanwelle Sobitha thera had convinced her uncle and aunt who accompanied them for the raping incident and had been planned when the two rooms were given to them to stay. The case was heard the day before yesterday at Kegalle courts and what the girl said was...........

“The incident had taken place some years back on a day in the month of July 2005.At that time owing to a conflict with my husband we were separated. At that time Ruwanwelle Sobitha was a Buddhist monk. He was famous for offering jobs and for his charming activities.  My uncle and aunt after making inquiries took me to him. When we reached his office and premises there were quite a lot who had come to see him. Later on a manager of his scrutinised by certificates. Then it was late evening. At that time there was transport for us to come back. There wasn’t even a three wheeler in the vicinity.
The monk proposed to us that there enough rooms in his premises and that we could put up the night at his building. We were given two rooms.  One for the uncle and the other for my aunty and me.  We were asked to take dinner .After dinner we came to our rooms. I saw the monk standing near the door. My aunt simultaneously left the room. The monk came into the room and locked it preventing from my going out. I thought to myself that this arrangement would have been pre planned with my aunt and uncle. I was really helpless.  The monk showed be a black object and said do not shout and try to escape. He frightened me and told there is nothing that I cannot do. I have got all types of objects with which I could do anything. He forcibly removed my clothes. I struggled to escape from him and did not allow him to rape me. He overpowered me and raped me. He then started to sleep. But I could not sleep. I was crying the whole night and was seated on a chair.
When it was dawn he went out of the room. I too went out of the room.I knew my own uncle and aunt had helped him in this exercise. The monk in front of my uncle and aunt said “she will get a job”. I said I do not want jobs in this manner’ and went to hospital for treatment.
This girl had taken his aunty and uncle to give evidence as they had helped the monk to achieve his objective. I produced a medical report given by Dr Sivasundaram where it is stated that I was treated for some bruises and small cuts on my body sustained while trying to rape me forcibly.”

Ruwanwelle Sobitha had been in custody when produced for this case. The Magistrate had ordered for him to be further remanded.
