Why did you decide to resign from your position as a Member of Parliament?
Malani speaks
Many rumours were spread with Malani Fonseka resigning from her position as a Member of Parliament and joining the same designation again. She has first given her resignation to the Secretary General of Parliament and that had been accepted. Yet with the intervention of the President that decision had been changed. It was reported that she was about to lose the pension that was supposed to get for being a member of Parliament and since she had been appointed on the same day, she had received that privilege.
Media was very critical of her saying that she had not done anything as a Member of Parliament. Malani Fonseka has answered all the questions that arose with this incident. Her interview to the Sarasawiya newspaper is as below:
Why did you take such a decision?
There were certain issues in the party. So I was tempted to take such a decision as someone who loves both the party and the country alike.
I hope that wasn’t due to anyone’s threat.
No. Minister Basil Rajapakse appreciated me a lot and told me that I have done something that nobody else would do.
So, you changed your decision?
I had to do that because I was appointed by the President. So how can I not agree with his decision?
A particular newspaper had mentioned that you haven’t done anything towards the country during your term of 2 and half years as a Member of Parliament?
I too read that. Media is not a new thing to me. I am celebrating 50th anniversary of my life as a film actress. During that period most of the media supported me. But there are certain media which depends on politicians. Such a newspaper had published that news.
So that would mean that you don’t accept that accusation?
Definitely not, because I have done certain things towards the country, while been in my boundaries Even though media coverage was not given for those things, there are people who know the truth. I will be dedicating my life in the future towards serving the people.
