The young daughter who died of dengue had written a letter to her mother two days before she died thanking her for all what she had done to her:
Last week a student 10 years old, living in Pinwatta area in Panadura, studying in the scholarship class had died of dengue. She had written from her hospital bed a letter to her mother two days before she died thanking her mother profusely recollecting all what the mother had done to her. The content of the letter which is appended below is a very heart breaking for anyone who reads it.
The little girl had been a student in the scholarship class at the Sri Sumangala Balika Vidyalaya, Panadura. Her name is Amadhi Sithumini. Even before she was born her mother and father has had many conflicts and the father had separated from her mother. Since she was born she had been brought up by her mother attending to all her needs and responsibilities it is reliably learnt.
It is reported that several deaths owing to dengue had been reported from that area. The cause had been owing to dirty water that was flowing along ‘Thalpitiya’ canal which was a breeding place for dengue mosquitoes. She had acquired dengue on the 10th and had been admitted to the Colombo South,Kalubowila General Hospital. As her platelets count in the blood was diminishing fast she had been transferred her to the Lady Ridgeway Children’s Hospital where she had died on the 14th.
This young girl had performed well in the scholarship examination and had been in anticipation in receiving favourable results. During her last days she had thought death was imminent. As she was brought up devoid of a father she had thought of everything what her dear mother had done to her from her birth and had thought of writing a letter to her expressing her highest appreciation for all what she had done to her. She had written this letter while she was in her senses just two days prior to her death, would anyone believe it. The letter was shown by the dead girl’s mother to media personnel with emotional tears falling through her eyes. The contents of the letter are as follows:
‘ “Amma”
Why did you convert your blood into milk to feed me Amma? I knew that you were very kind at heart to me. I know very well owing to financial constrains you fed me skipping your own meals purely to bring me up. I am ever so grateful to you. When I grew up and started schooling you thought me what was good and what was bad. You showed me the correct path as how to live. You thought me lessons, thought to write and draw pictures, how to keep my foot on the ground and how to move in society. All that you did was so with the sole intention to make me a good citizen to the country.
During my small days when I fell and cried you never hesitated to carry me and console me. You also went to the extent of telling poems to make me happy and console me.
Each time when I fell ill you were always by my bedside until I recovered. After my birthday in February, in the month of April when I was very young for the new year you happened to have a fireworks display in our garden. You did not hesitate for a moment to take me hospital and stood by my side until I was cured. I burnt my feet and you did not hesitate to take me to hospital for treatment and stayed by my side until I was cured. I know all about those incidents very well. Amma? Please fill the gap...... (The gap was filled with the appropriate word.)
Yours loving daughter”
The gap was filled by her mother as ‘yes’ it was reported.
