KAMAL SPEAKS ABOUT THAI MASSAGE AT NARAHENPITA

On the 27th of last month the case about the raiding of a brothel at Fife Road, Narahenpita was taken up for hearing. The Manager of the Thai brothel had confessed to the Colombo’s Additional Magistrate, Nishantha Peiris that the services of Thai Women could be bought for sums above Rs 5000/-The four who were present at the time the Police raided the place have been further remanded and the magistrate had wanted the Police to bring medical reports of the Thai women for AIDS.
There was a huge uproar with the involvement and mentioning the name of Actor Kamal Addararachchi in this issue. To the ‘Dinamina’ paper, Kamal had mentioned it as a ‘madak’. However to the ‘Lakbima’ paper he had told that he too had patronised the centre as a help to his friend. Today the 3rd he had confessed to the ‘Dinamina ‘paper he had patronised the massage clinic purely for a massage and for nothing else. He also had quipped that each time he patronised the place was along with his wife.

What Kamal what do you say about this matter?
“It is a wrong story. This had been a very low class work of a certain media institution. These allegations are baseless.”

That means you have not got involved in a business involving Thai women?
“No. I did not get involved in any business. I do not even act in low class Tele dramas, like mega Tele dramas and those which lack quality. I am an actor who had been hailed and acclaimed as prestigious. I do justice to serve the various types of Arts in the country. They are all mudslinging stories.”

Then what was said in the newspapers, a brothel at Narahenpita was raided and the owner escapes?
“ I am here in person. How can they say I had escaped and If I had run away how could I speak to you in this manner.”

Then tell what exactly happened?
“The establishment is owned by one of my best friends. It is only a ‘spa’ centre and not a brothel house. To serve the clients two Thai women had arrived. They are well versed with the western methods of massaging.”

Is this how the story was made?
“That is what I say. I received a telephone call from a very good friend of mine that his establishment has been cordoned by Police and for me to come immediately. When a request was made by a good friend i had to oblige them. At that time I was travelling in my car with my wife and kids close to this establishment. I parked my car and went in and asked the Police personnel what’s going on. They said they had come here on a complaint made and they wanted to search the place.”

Were you arrested at that time?
“It did not happen like that. I told the Police there aren’t any nefarious activities going on here. This is a business which is legalised and genuine.”
Are you a person who is patronising this place?
‘Yes. I too take a service from here. Each time I patronised this place it was along with my wife. If it is a notorious place I would not take my wife.”

Then why are these stories are been spread?
“There are some racketeers who on the pretext of running massage clinics make money on extending to prostitution which are illegal. There are many who were jealous about the spa centre of my friend as he drew a lot of clients via various methods like advertising etc. They did not like his centre to flourish in this business as they could not compete. Their aim was to break the confidence of his clients. These are all because of allegations of his competitors. I am sad as the media should be held responsible for bringing the famed name of mine to disrepute. It had caused the downfall of the established ‘SPA’.”

If you are correct, for the damage caused to you, you could institute legal action for defaming your character?
“I have still not thought of it. Any person could fight against his rights. I could fight against my human rights violations as well. There are courts equipped to deal with them. But I need not go that far. I could safeguard my reputation and convince my fans by conveying the truth and the true story. The media should be respected. We as artistes always respect the media. It is mental agony when distorted stories are published. It is bad for all artistes.
People should be supplied with their wants just like soothing their minds. The base has to be made for that. It is the responsibility of all artistes, to make personal contrivance. It is my duty as well. A person who is liked by the people is like that.”

For massage clinics in Sri Lanka an automatic black label has been affixed. Do you think it is against our culture? Need they to be abolished?
“These types of ‘spas’ are very popular throughout the world. The results the clients derive are enormous. If you think you are losing hair applying different types of oils will not sort the problem. However via massages the client’s objective could be achieved easily. Hence the massaging centres need to be encouraged and not discouraged which is popular worldwide.”

Comparing to your popularity in the field of acting and singing this incident is definitely a drawback. What have you got to say ultimately?
“Publishing distorted facts without consulting me personally has made me to fall down mentally unnecessarily to an unprecedented level. It would have been a great boost for our culture and me in particular if this story was interpreted correctly by consulting me for correct facts. This is the true story.”
