MINI-TORNADO IN WELLAWATTA

Savoy hall has been damaged after the mini- tornado that had taken place at Wellawatta.

As a result of the mini-tornado that took place at Wellawatta yesterday, many places including Savoy cinema hall, Wellawatta Police station, Cooray grounds, Sugatha temple had been damaged.
The villagers have said that it took only 2 minutes for all these to happen. They have also said that an unusual soft wind had blown first which had gradually increased into a heavy blow.
 Meteorological department have pointed out that it is recognized as a mini-tornado condition since the wind had swirled around at the same place like a storm.
It is reported that the roof of the Orchard building of Savoy theatre had been damaged and the roof of the Fraud Bureau Office and Wellawatta Police station had been taken away by the wind.
At the same time it was reported that the Cooray playground  at the Peterson Street has been totally damaged. Around 200 houses have been damaged and about 30 people including a Police Constable had been injured.
