MYSTERIOUS CROCODILE DEATHS IN NILWALA RIVER

Mysterious dead bodies of crocodiles have been floating in the ‘Nilwala River’

during the course of the last few days. The villagers have seen about 5 dead crocodiles from the 26th to the 28th of last month. However, no one had reported the relevant authorities or Akuressa Police about these deaths. In an inquiry made by the Media from Malimbada, Divisional Secretary Nilmini Herath, she has said that she has not got any information regarding of such an incident.
However with the death of a school girl who had gone to the river to wash her face, entire country’s attention was drawn towards the crocodiles in the ‘Nilwala River.’
At the same time the Authorities of the Department of Conservation of forests started a mission in an endeavour to catch the crocodiles. During this exercise as a result a 15 feet long crocodile was caught on the 15th of last month. Yet,since there is no sanctuary to keep the crocodiles that are been caught. After that they had abruptly stopped the mission, half way through the exercise they commenced. These unexpected mysterious deaths were reported after that.
It is reported that the Nodal Crocodile in the ‘Nilwala River’ is a rare type identified by the World Conservative Organization and it is also recorded in the Red list.
