O/L “Basket System” will be changed from 2013
- Minister of Education-
Minister of Education, Bandula Gunawardane has revealed that the O/L subjects will be changed from 2013.
He stated that what prevails is a “basket system” and it is not a popular system. Yet since the students think that it is difficult to earn marks for important subjects, they omit them. He further stated that this system might change the current situation.
As he reveals, the students will have 6 compulsory subjects from 2013and three other subjects will be relevant to A/Ls. Accordingly Mother tongue, Second language, Religion, Science, Mathematics and History will be compulsory subjects and the subjects like Agriculture, Life Skills, Entrepreneurial Studies which were previously taught will be replaced with A/L Science subjects like Mathematics, Commerce and Arts and New Technology subjects. Thus, the students can choose three subjects from the above 5subjects which will be introduced from 2013. With the introduction of the new system, the students will have to sit for 9 subjects.
Thus, the Minister of Education, Bandula Gunawardane states that the foundation for A/L will be set from O/L’s itself.
