PRESIDENT DISCUSSES MATTERS WITH PRINT AND ELECTRONIC MEDIA PERSONNEL

Colombo had won owing to Wickremasinghe’s tactics and efforts of canvassing on roads:

Colombo,Dehiwala, kotte,Kolonnawa MunicipaL Councils combined to be controlled under an Authority.

Private Medical College in Malabe will not effect at all the free education.

Yesterday, the President held his usual discussion with Heads and representatives of all print and electronic media personnel at ‘Temple Trees’. The motive was to discuss about the recent and present problems in the country to have open views. The following are excerpts of this discussion:

Media Personnel: President, it appears that you have been only talking about the underworld, protection to the VIP’s etc.
President: It has not happened like that. We have carried out operations continuously. There is provision other than for the Defence Ministry and the Police to use arms. You may know that some need a convoy of vehicles with security personnel. That type of mentally has developed. We are changing that. We are doing it to a set plan.
An incident where a Police station was attacked was reported. This incident cannot be endorsed. Even the Police are not allowed to beat and kill suspects. For them, also the law would be applied. The attacking of police stations is due to burst of sudden anger. This is because warrants have been issued to Kassippu Mudalali’s, drug dealers etc. The Government cannot surrender to them.

Media personnel: This destructive politics have now reached a climax. Could you call for a debate with those competent and take appropriate action.
President: The main reason was that for 30 years we had to solely concentrate on the ethnic war. We had to capture and rebuild a country that was lawless .Some have forgotten about this fact. We ended a period where so many were scared to get out from their homes after dark and were shivering in fear. That culture and moral erosion was severe. It is now we have commenced to find solutions.

Media personnel: the Tamil Nadu action against our fishermen is not resolved. More and more Indian fish come to our seas. What is your opinion?
President: It is a pity that the fish do not know the borders. The fishermen automatically cross the borders. I know this well as I was once the Minister of Fisheries. This is a natural conflict .But it is wrong. There are instances when our trollers cross their borders and catch fish.We have to resolve it amicably with India.

Media Personnel: What happened to Colombo?
President: Everyone saw how Wickremasinghe canvassed from roads. He even met the constituents travelling in 3 wheelers. That is how they won.
Media Personnel: Are you going to make the Municipality an ‘Authority’
President; Yes. It is a separate thing. I will appoint all Mayors and the members of the Colombo Municipality, Dehiwala-Mt Lavinia, Kotte, and Kolonnawa Municipalities an ‘Authority. Now the responsibilities of the Chairmen of Pradeshiya Sabha are not like those days. They have a tremendous work load upon them to solve. Hence the country needs responsible officers to monitor the activities, especially the financial side. We will take responsibility and steps to curb the malpractices. If this continues what will happen to the country .He asked whether you are aware that Chairmen of Pradeshiya Sabha’s go abroad with cheque books in their pockets. If this continues what will happen to the country. There should be a clear transparency between the Government, Opposition and the Institutions.
Media personnel: What happened to the Director Board of the Sri Jayewardanapura Hospital?

This answer was given by the Minister of Health, Maithipala Sirisena: There was a problem that was going on for some time. Some office bearers had been in their positions for 18- 20 -years. Some had been in the Director Board and others in the Administration. Some do not look at the faces of each other. They are angry. This was confirmed by the COPE report. Hence we took action to change the Director Board. The existing Act of the hospital also would be changed completely.

Media personnel: What will happen to the Malabe Private Medical College?
Maithripala Sirisena answered to this question as well
The GMOA and our Ministry have close links. Both are in agreement that there should have proper standards. Malabe Private Medical College has no hospital, which is an important component. All other Private Medical Colleges conforms to all the required facilities and they are conducted according to the Government rules.
President: Says that the introduction of Private medical Colleges would not hamper to any extent, the country’s free education. The children of average citizen of this country spend millions to Foreign Universities to educate their children. We want to retain that money by giving the same education.
Media personnel: What do you think of our Police?
President: I also think in the manner you think. The IGP acts accordingly and according to the constitution of the Government .But the rogues, drug dealers, underworld criminals and those who grab necklaces cannot be allowed to be beaten by the Police.
