Is the talk about Sangakkara to contest Local Council elections true?

A much spoken controversial topic has arose when a weekend newspaper had reported that cricketer Kumar Sangakkara is having an intention and contemplating  for contesting for the Mayor’s seat under the UNP ticket in the forthcoming Local Council elections.
The name of Kumar Sangakkara had not been stated in the newspaper. But it is suspected after the uproar, when he made the world know about certain adverse comments made by him against the Government tarnishing the image of the country, may be the reason for publishing this news item.
