Minister to change legislation to lower marriageable ages of young girls to 15
Minister of Public Administration WDJ Seneviratne had said last Friday at Ratnapura, while attending to a function of the District Birth and Marriages staffs anniversary celebrations had added that steps would be taken to lower the marriageable age of young girls from 18 to 15.
“Today although young girls show willingness to marry at ages below 18, the law does not permit it. It is a question that needs to be addressed. I would like to change the laws accordingly. When I spoke about this change earlier ‘Mother Organisations’ and various societies objected to it as it would ruin the careers of young girls. However in spite of these protests I am determined to implement this change by passing new legislation in this regard for the benefit of many”.
