FIVE YELLOW CROSSINGS AT MIRISWATTA JUNCTION

A rare main road which consists of five yellow crossings within a short distance of just 50 meters

When we as pedestrians walk along most roads we find it often very difficult to locate a yellow crossing to cross the road which is according to road rules implemented by the traffic Police. At most instances one had to walk a fair distance to find a yellow crossing to enable to cross the road in the legal manner.
We as layman are not aware on what basis; the traffic department of the Police mark these zebra crossings. However when yellow crossings are marked close to each other the motorists have to encounter a hazard while driving as they need to constantly apply breaks at these crossings when people are moving.
In complete in contrast to the above in Gampaha, at the Miriswatta junction along Kandy road there is an extraordinary number of yellow crossings. There are five such yellow crossings for the benefit of the pedestrians at close intervals within a space of just 50 meters. This is very advantageous to pedestrians but disadvantageous to the motorists as they have been forced to stop to allow the pedestrians to cross the road by applying brakes and then starting to precede which is a hassle.
The photographs of these five pedestrian crossings stated above are shown BELOW:
