The heaviness in the abdomen after eating, discomfort around the navel, or pain in any part of the abdomen is often recognized by many as merely a 'gas' condition. However, gas may not be the only cause in every such instance.
An article on this topic has been published on the NDTV website. These details are noted there.According to Dr. Anukalp Prakash, Director of Gastroenterology at CK Birla Hospital in India, gas pain can arise from various locations in the abdomen, and sometimes these symptoms closely resemble those of other ailments. Therefore, if you frequently experience abdominal pain, heaviness, or a bloated sensation, it is important to correctly understand where gas-related pain typically originates.
Dr. Anukalp states that when gas is trapped in the stomach or upper digestive system, one may experience pressure, heaviness, and a feeling of fullness below the ribs. Additionally, frequent burping, nausea, or discomfort after eating may also occur concurrently. However, persistent pain in the upper abdomen should not be mistaken for merely a gas condition, as it can also manifest as a symptom of acidity, gastritis, and gallbladder-related problems.
The doctor points out that when gas accumulates in the intestines, a rolling or squeezing pain may occur in the lower abdomen. Often, this pain does not stay in one place but tends to move to the left and right sides. Some relief from this condition is obtained after passing gas or stool.
Gas trapped in the right side of the large intestine can cause pain on the right side of the abdomen or below the right ribs. However, if this pain is very sharp or continuous, it could also be a precursor to appendicitis or a gallbladder-related condition.
The doctor also states that gas pain can occur on the left side below the ribs. Accumulation of gas in this area can cause a sharp, stabbing sensation, pressure, or a rolling pain. Additionally, gas formation in the intestines and abdominal bloating can cause pain or tightness around the navel. Abdominal sounds and bloating are also common symptoms observed here.
Dr. Anukalp Prakash advises that if you suffer from excessive gas formation in the abdomen, relief can be obtained at home by following a few healthy habits. This condition can be managed by walking for 10 to 15 minutes after meals, drinking adequate water throughout the day, and applying a warm compress to the abdomen.
Additionally, the doctor advises eating food slowly and chewing it well. If you happen to have an allergy to a certain food type, avoiding those foods is also a suitable step to relieve gas pain.
