News has now been revealed that at the end of a liquor party held at a vehicle repair shop in Grandpass, the life of a 24-year-old youth was brutally taken. The killers had taken the body of this youth, who was killed by an assault, and his motorcycle to a jungle area in Pugoda, Papiliyawala, and set them on fire on seven tires to destroy them.

However, their attempt to suppress all evidence of that inhumane crime with fire and water was ultimately thwarted by a single small amulet.

The youth thus murdered was a 24-year-old named Kulandai Jesu Seran, residing on Sedawatta Road, Wellampitiya. The amulet found at the site where the body was burned after the murder was identified by his mother as the amulet tied around her son's waist, further confirming the details of this tragedy.

During interrogations conducted over a 48-hour detention order from the main suspect arrested in connection with this incident, a lot of information about the crime and the concealment of the dead body was revealed. Based on the information received from him, the police took steps to report the facts to the Pugoda and Avissawella courts. Accordingly, on the orders of Pugoda Acting Magistrate Mr. Kamal Sumith Kumara, the jungle area located behind a factory in Pugoda, Papiliyawala, was subjected to an intense search.

This on-site inspection was conducted for nearly five hours with the participation of Specialist Judicial Medical Officer Mr. R.A.S. Rajapaksha from Wathupitiwala Hospital and officers from the Gampaha Divisional Criminal Investigation Laboratory. There, investigators were able to find wire fragments of seven tires said to have been used to burn the youth's body, the amulet tied around the deceased youth's waist, the switch key of his motorcycle, and several bone fragments.

The main suspect further revealed that the bones and motorcycle parts remaining after burning the body and motorcycle were thrown into the Kelani River from the Aswatta Bridge in the Kosgama police division. A search operation was also carried out at that location according to an order from Avissawella Acting Magistrate Mrs. Champa C. Chandradasa. Although Navy divers conducted operations in the Kelani River for four hours, the police state that they were unable to find any of the parts said to have been thrown into the river.

With the disappearance of the youth, the owner of the vehicle repair shop where the liquor party was held, along with others, had fled the area. The police expanded investigations by obtaining travel bans against them and seeking public assistance to identify the suspects. To evade the law, the two main suspects had cut their hair short and disguised themselves, and were cunning enough to make phone calls using a router to give the impression that they were abroad.

However, thwarting all their efforts, based on information received by Chief Police Inspector Kapila Kariyawasam, OIC of the Organized Crime Investigation Unit of the Colombo Crimes Division, four individuals, including the two main suspects, were arrested by the police. Although they tried to burn all evidence of the crime and hide it at the bottom of a river, ultimately, the hidden truth resurfaced from a small amulet tied around the waist and the motorcycle's switch key.
