The Election Commission has informed several internal factions of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) that it cannot currently be considered a formally recognized political party. The Commission has already identified the Sri Lanka Freedom Party as a party facing an internal crisis.
To inquire into this crisis, the Commission summoned various factions of the party before it on the 6th. Representatives Dayasiri Jayasekara, Nimal Siripala de Silva, Lasantha Alagiyawanna, and Duminda Dissanayake participated in that occasion.
There, the Election Commission has instructed the relevant parties to submit a new application after fulfilling the necessary criteria to gain recognition as a registered political party. The Commission has also stated that this must include holding a formal party election in accordance with the relevant criteria.
A political party facing such an internal crisis does not have the ability to submit nominations for an upcoming election. If such a party wishes to submit nominations for an election, its representatives must first appear before the Election Commission and reach an agreement to resolve the relevant crisis.
The Election Commission points out that if the party fails to resolve its internal conflict in that manner, it could lose the opportunity to submit nominations for the relevant election. The Commission has further confirmed that the same procedure will be followed regarding the Sri Lanka Freedom Party in the future.
