A comprehensive investigation has been launched against a team of officers from the Badulla Divisional Anti-Corruption Unit regarding an incident where they allegedly entered a house under the guise of a drug raid and robbed property, including a gold necklace worth 2.4 million rupees. The Badulla Deputy Inspector General of Police's office initiated these investigations based on a complaint made by the affected businessman to the Inspector General's relief desk.
According to the complaint that forms the basis of this investigation, it is alleged that the officers, in addition to the gold necklace, also stole 150,000 rupees in cash and four bottles of whiskey from the house. On the day of the incident, six individuals dressed in civilian clothes inspected the house, and claiming to have found 'ice' (crystal methamphetamine) drugs, they arrested the businessman.
However, the businessman suspects that this raid was a pre-planned one. As stated in his complaint, an unknown person arrived and spoke with him a short while before the police officers came, and then left. It is also reported that after the raid, the officers removed the CCTV camera system installed in the house, claiming they needed to inspect it.
The complaint further states that during this arrest, the businessman was wearing his gold necklace, weighing four pounds, and that police officers instructed him to leave it at home. Following police instructions, he placed the gold necklace in the wardrobe at home.
The businessman alleges that he was subsequently remanded for several months on a false charge of drug possession. The theft was uncovered while he was in remand. When his sister visited him, he asked her to check the house. Upon her visit, it was revealed that the gold necklace left in the wardrobe, the money, and the whiskey bottles were all missing.
Since no one else entered the house after his arrest, the complainant strongly suspects that this was a pre-planned theft carried out by the same group of police officers. The Badulla Deputy Inspector General of Police's office is currently conducting its investigations into this allegation.
