Seventy-nine individuals have lost their lives while in police custody in Sri Lanka over the past five years. The recent sudden death of a young man in a police cell in Homagama was reported against such a backdrop.
In light of this situation concerning arrested suspects, new security measures have now been put in place.According to sources from Police Headquarters, the installation of security camera systems in all police station cells across the island has already commenced. These new camera systems are being installed to clearly show the interior of the cells.
The main objective of this measure is to prevent assaults or any other misconduct against suspects held in police cells, according to the relevant sources.
Additionally, this will directly support the safety of those in custody as well as ensure the legality of the police cells. Specifically, the process of providing various illegal substances into the cells through relatives visiting prisoners will also be prevented with the implementation of these security camera systems.
