In the current economic, political, and social backdrop, 'Was Kavi' (poems of curse/satire), created to express disapproval against the rulers, are rapidly circulating on social media platforms including Facebook, TikTok, and YouTube these days. Along with this wave of Was Kavi, a series of posts began circulating on social media, stating that individuals promoting them on social media would be punished according to the law, and that the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) was working to arrest the monk who composed the relevant Was Kavi, as stated by the Police Media Spokesperson.
However, Police Media Spokesperson Mr. Frederick U. Wootler has confirmed that this circulating rumor is completely false. He clarified that he has never stated that legal action would be taken against individuals promoting Was Kavi on social media, or that the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) was acting to arrest those who composed the relevant poems. Furthermore, he emphasized that the Sri Lanka Police or the Criminal Investigation Department has no intention of taking legal action against such parties. No official reporting on this matter has been made by any mainstream media either.
Although the police have not made such a decision regarding Was Kavi, the Police Media Spokesperson recently stated that the law would be strictly enforced against individuals who disseminate false information on social media in a manner that incites public unrest. He made this statement while clarifying false posts circulated on social media concerning an incident where Balangoda Kassapa Thero, among the monks gathered at Viharamahadevi Park requesting the release of Gnanasara Thero, slipped and fell, which was falsely portrayed as an assault.
Meanwhile, Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) Member of Parliament, Mr. Nalin Bandara, stated in Parliament on October 20, 2026, that the government is deeply concerned about this controversial Was Kavi circulating on social media and has reached a point where investigations are being conducted to find the person who composed it. The fact that journalists questioned this incident during the Cabinet decision briefing held on the same day further confirms that this is a widely discussed topic in society.
