A shocking incident has been reported from a house in Blackwood Ramakrishna Estate, Haputale, where a 78-year-old elderly woman was strangled to death, and two gold earrings she was wearing on her nose were stolen. Haputale Police have launched a wide-ranging investigation to arrest her 38-year-old nephew on suspicion of this crime.
The murdered woman lived in the same house with the suspect nephew and his wife. According to information revealed during police investigations, on the day of the incident, the suspect came home heavily intoxicated and had an argument with his wife. Following this dispute, his wife left the house with their two children and went to her father's house in the Viharagala area.
The next morning, the wife returned to her house with the intention of sending the children to school. There, she called out to her sleeping aunt, and when she received no response, she removed the blanket to check. At that moment, she saw blood flowing from her aunt's nose and observed that the two gold earrings she was wearing on her nose were also missing.
The suspect's wife has lodged a complaint with the Haputale Police regarding this matter. Her complaint further states that she suspects her husband may have committed the murder of her aunt, and that he has been missing from the house since the incident.
After reporting the facts of this death to the Bandarawela Magistrate's Court, the body was sent for a post-mortem examination on the magistrate's order. The post-mortem report confirmed that the woman's death was caused by strangulation.
A special police team has launched operations to apprehend the missing suspect. Under the guidance of Deputy Inspector General of Police for Badulla Division, Laksiri Wijesena, and Bandarawela District Superintendent of Police, I.M.A. Udayakumara, a team of officers comprising Chief Police Inspector Jayakody, Sub Inspector Indika, several police sergeants, and a constable, led by Haputale Police Station OIC Chief Police Inspector M.K. Dissanayake, are conducting further investigations.
