The court today (7) decided to remand Mrs. Shiranthi Rajapaksa, wife of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa, who was arrested on charges of criminally misappropriating Rs. 10 million from the Siriliya Saviya Fund, until October 13.

As Mrs. Shiranthi was brought to the court in a van with a team of women from the Bribery Commission, a group of about 10-20 women loyal to Mrs. Shiranthi gathered around the court, cheering and shouting for her. The police rescued Mrs. Shiranthi from them and escorted her into the court premises.

Subsequently, the court hearing concluded with Mrs. Shiranthi being remanded for 6 days. Although it was late at night by then, the aforementioned loyal women's group continued to remain near the court gate, and it was reported that they gathered there to watch Mrs. Shiranthi being boarded onto the prison bus. As she was being boarded, they chanted 'Jaya Wewa' (Victory!), 'Victory to the mother of our motherland!', and also made sure she could hear them saying 'Madam, we are here'.

After Mrs. Shiranthi was brought to the bus, her departure to prison appeared to be an emotional moment for them, and some were heard crying. Meanwhile, one woman was seen fainting, and others were captured on camera supporting her as they walked.
