Beruwala Police have launched investigations into an incident where a person, disguised as an affectionate father choosing a pair of gold earrings to gift for his daughter's exam success, subtly fled with gold jewelry worth Rs. 107,000 from a jewelry store in Beruwala town after showing a fake online payment.

As stated by the police yesterday (19), the suspect arrived at the store dressed entirely in black. While selecting the gold jewelry, he sought the assistance of another woman present in the store and spoke very confidently, stating that he didn't have much knowledge about it. He managed to win the trust of both the shop owner and others present by saying, 'My daughter is seven years old, and she passed her exam well. I want to buy this to surprise her.'

After selecting the pair of earrings, the suspect asked the shop owner if the payment could be made via a bank card. Since card payments were not accepted, the shop owner then told him to transfer the money to his son's account via an online method. Accordingly, the businessman called his son, who was not at the store at the time, and provided his bank account number to the suspect.

After a short while, about two or three minutes, the suspect displayed a fake receipt on his mobile phone to the shop owner, saying, 'Here, boss, I've paid this amount,' and immediately fled the scene. The shop owner's complaint to the police states that the suspect subtly fled precisely at the moment he was inquiring from his son whether the money had been credited to the account.

Later, when the shop owner's son arrived at the store and confirmed that the money for the transaction had not been credited to the account, it was revealed to be a fraud. Immediately, the businessman went to the Beruwala Police and lodged a complaint about it. Upon examining the security camera footage related to the incident, it was very clearly recorded how the suspect, dressed in black, selected the gold jewelry and displayed a fake receipt on his mobile phone to indicate payment, and the police are conducting further investigations based on these visuals.
