Five days have passed as of today (20th) since a group of Buddhist monks commenced a Satyagraha at Viharamahadevi Park in Colombo, demanding the release of Venerable Galagodaaththe Gnanasara Thero.
The commencement of this continuous protest was marked on the 16th. On that day, a group of monks first gathered in front of the Presidential Secretariat, and then proceeded to the Ministry of Buddha Sasana. There, they engaged in a discussion with the Ministry Secretary, focusing on their demands.
However, stating that the discussion was unsuccessful, the group of monks proceeded to Viharamahadevi Park that afternoon. A tense situation also arose between the police and the monks when they attempted to construct a platform there for the Satyagraha.
This Satyagraha, which commenced amidst such a backdrop, is currently ongoing. The monks engaged in the Satyagraha strongly emphasize that they will not leave Viharamahadevi Park until Venerable Galagodaaththe Gnanasara Thero is released and a proper solution is received for their demands.
