The Emmanuel Macron government is taking steps to swiftly pass a new bill drafted to recover damages to public property from protesters during street protests in France. Trade unions and opposition parties strongly accuse that this severely violates the fundamental right to protest.
This new law has been introduced while the country is facing a severe social and political crisis due to protests that have taken place over the past period. According to this proposed law, individuals who participated in a protest within a group or in its vicinity will also be held responsible for paying compensation for acts of sabotage and damage that occur during a protest, even if they were not directly involved.
Furthermore, this bill proposes to expand the use of drones to control protests. French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu states that this bill is essential to curb the recent violent clashes and looting. However, human rights organizations and left-wing politicians point out that this measure will severely undermine citizens' democratic rights and freedom to protest. Some legal scholars note that the government is working to restrict public freedoms through various decrees without declaring a state of emergency. Critics also warn that this could create a favorable situation for far-right parties in upcoming elections.
