The owner and an employee of a dog care center were arrested yesterday (27) by Katana Police on suspicion of beating a dog to death with a shovel at the center.
The three-year-old dog named Tango was admitted to the center, located in the Katana Police division, on August 8. An employee had beaten Tango with a shovel during a fight with another dog, and the dog died a few days later.
It is reported that the act of beating with a shovel was recorded on the institution's CCTV cameras. The owner stated that although the dog was in good health when admitted to the institution, its kidneys failed after staying there for a month.
An animal organization had lodged a complaint with the Katana Police, accusing the center of neglecting its responsibilities. The hearing of that complaint was scheduled for yesterday, and the owner and employee of the institution, who were summoned for it, were arrested on the spot.
The two arrested individuals are scheduled to be produced before the Negombo Magistrate's Court today (28). Katana Police Station OIC Chief Police Inspector Wasantha Sudasinghe and other officers are conducting further investigations.
