The current government is still operating as if trapped in the role of the opposition, stated Mr. Harin Fernando, Deputy General Secretary of the United National Party. He made these remarks to the media today (20) after appearing before the Badulla Magistrate's Court for a case related to an election law violation.

Mr. Fernando pointed out that a strange phenomenon can be observed these days where the government also engages in protests against the opposition's demonstrations. He emphasized that this is the first time such an incident has been witnessed in this country, and it clearly illustrates the direction in which the government is heading.

He also commented on a government political meeting held in the Badulla area. Referring to the fact that women were introduced as the government's main strength at that meeting, Mr. Fernando stated that he respects women. However, he further mentioned that he feels they might have been misled through this, as their knowledge of politics is limited.

Clarifying his stance on the government's development activities, Mr. Harin Fernando accused the current government of not having initiated any projects of its own yet, apart from inaugurating projects started by other parties. He recalled that all the programs currently underway, such as providing job opportunities in Israel and Japan, and establishing an insulin factory, were initiatives brought forth by members of his party in the past.

Furthermore, he pointed out that the much-discussed Metro Bus service was also initiated by former President Ranil Wickremesinghe. He stated that it would be better if the government would showcase a few of its own projects to the public instead of inaugurating programs started by others.

However, the Deputy General Secretary of the United National Party concluded his remarks by stating that he is satisfied with the current government's program, while emphasizing that the pace at which the government is moving is very slow.
