The Department of Prisons has granted permission for former First Lady Shiranthi Rajapaksa, who is currently in remand custody, to obtain food from her home.

Prison Media Spokesperson Senaka Pallethanna stated that she, who is currently detained at Welikada Prison, has been placed in a ward with ordinary female inmates. However, prison authorities have taken steps to provide special security for her even within that ordinary ward.

She was arrested on the 7th on charges of obtaining 10 million rupees from a state bank and misusing it, corruption, and committing offenses under the Public Property Act.

Following her arrest, the former First Lady was produced before the Colombo Chief Magistrate's Court, where she was ordered to be remanded until the 13th. She is currently at Welikada Prison based on that court order.
