The Financial Crimes Investigation Division of the Criminal Investigation Department has launched a special investigation into an alleged transaction between a former chairman of a multi-purpose cooperative society in the Matara area, who is accused of a massive financial irregularity amounting to approximately ten crore rupees, and a high-ranking female police officer in the area.
In connection with this investigation, CID officers questioned Chief Police Inspector Varuni Bogahawatta, who serves as the OIC of the Administration Division at Kotavila Police, Matara, for nearly two hours. A senior police officer confirmed to Lankadeepa that after obtaining a statement from her, the motor vehicle she used was also taken into the custody of the Police Financial Crimes Division.
Investigations have revealed a connection between this motor vehicle taken into police custody and the related cooperative financial irregularity. It has been revealed during investigations that the former chairman of the multi-purpose cooperative society paid the monthly leasing installments for this Chief Police Inspector's motor vehicle using funds belonging to the society. Questioning her and taking the vehicle into custody was a step to confirm these facts.
CID sources state that the alleged financial irregularity at the cooperative society, which is at the root of this incident, amounts to nearly ten crore rupees. The former chairman involved in this financial fraud was previously arrested on suspicion by a team of officers from the Financial Crimes Investigation Division. During the investigations into the alleged financial irregularities at the cooperative society, information about this motor vehicle was also revealed to the investigators.
However, when questioned about this, the Chief Police Inspector told the CID that the former chairman was a school friend whom she had known since her school days. The Financial Crimes Investigation Division of the Criminal Investigation Department is currently conducting further investigations into the incident.
