A teacher who worked at a private school in Hertfordshire, UK, has been sentenced to seven years in prison on charges of sexually abusing one of her students. It was revealed in court that this 65-year-old teacher, Deborah Franklin, tied up a school student under the age of 14 in her bed, blindfolded him, and abused him in this manner.

This series of crimes occurred between 1991 and 1995, and the victim first met her when he joined her class.

It is reported that she then became his private tutor and systematically lured him into these abuses. The victim, now in his 40s, stated that she tied him to the bed and blindfolded him, and he had no understanding of what was happening at that moment. Although he told his father about this before he turned 13, his father took no action, fearing it would interfere with a religious ceremony (bar mitzvah) that was scheduled to take place at the time.

This incident came to light in 2024, when the victim learned that the suspect was still working as a teacher and reported it to the police. Despite numerous photographs of them together, she initially told the police that she had no recollection of him. However, the jury unanimously found her guilty of eight counts of serious indecency. Under the law in force at the time these incidents occurred, which stipulated a maximum sentence of two years in prison for one charge,

Judge Kamran Choudhury of St Albans Crown Court sentenced her to seven years in prison. Although the relevant law was changed in 1997, increasing the maximum penalty for such an offense to 10 years, the old law had to be applied to this case. The judge emphasized that as a teacher who should guide a child, she had committed a serious breach of trust for her sexual gratification. Additionally, she has been issued a public protection order for a period of ten years after her release from prison, and she is prohibited from engaging in any occupation involving children. Prosecuting lawyer Gavin Pottinger presented a statement from the victim to the court, in which he stated that this abuse had been a constant shadow throughout his life, and it had caused severe anxiety and suicidal thoughts. The victim further stated, "I want to cry for my lost childhood."
