Kurunduwatta Police have launched an investigation against Venerable Balangoda Kassapa Thero regarding an incident where he allegedly made a misleading, false, and provocative statement to the media during a Satyagraha held at Viharamahadevi Park in Colombo, demanding the release of Venerable Galagodaatte Gnanasara Thero, who is serving a prison sentence.

Investigating officers reported to Colombo Chief Magistrate Asanga S. Bodaragama (on the 26th) that this investigation is being carried out based on a complaint made by Mr. Jagath Basnayake, the organizer of the Pelawatta National People's Power office.

On the 22nd, Venerable Kassapa Thero made the controversial statement to the media. He accused two individuals who came to the Satyagraha site with two knives of being sent by the Pelawatta National People's Power office. However, the National People's Power has pointed out in its complaint that this statement is completely false, malicious, and undermines public trust.

Kurunduwatta Police informed the court that a comprehensive investigation has been launched into the matter, as disseminating such false statements in society constitutes a violation of Section 98 of the Police Ordinance.

Considering the facts presented, the Chief Magistrate ordered a private media institution to provide the unedited video footage of the relevant statement made by Venerable Kassapa Thero to the police. The Magistrate further ordered the police to promptly report the progress of this investigation to the court.
