The Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption has launched a wide-ranging operation to freeze the assets and accounts of suspects in connection with the controversial incident of obtaining a bribe of 120 million rupees to provide relief to the person named 'Harak Kata'. The Commission today (30) informed the Colombo Chief Magistrate's Court that steps would be taken to freeze a luxury house belonging to the first suspect, Charith Abeysinghe, in relation to this case.

As investigations into this bribery incident progress, the law is being strictly enforced on the assets of other suspects as well. Accordingly, four bank accounts and several luxury motor vehicles belonging to Rakitha Rajapaksa, who has been named as the second suspect in the incident, have already been frozen. Furthermore, it was revealed in court that transactions related to two vehicles registered in the names of the wife and father of Varuna Handi Aruna Chathuranga, the third suspect, have also been completely suspended.

It is noteworthy that all these asset and account freezes are being carried out under the provisions of the Proceeds of Crime Act No. 5 of 2025. The Commission is scheduled to submit a detailed report related to this process to the court within the next 72 hours.

Considering the facts presented, Colombo Chief Magistrate Mr. Asanga S. Bodaragama ordered that the relevant case be called again on December 08th.
