Information has been revealed that a garage in the Egoda Uyana area of Moratuwa, which was operated under the guise of repairing ordinary motorcycles, had become a hub for a planned criminal network. Details of this criminal network came to light when three individuals suspected of being involved in snatching gold chains from women's necks and a murder that occurred in the Kalutara North area were arrested by the Anguruwatota Police.
A tip-off received while fleeing after snatching a gold chain in the Bandaragama area, along with an investigation conducted using CCTV footage, became the turning point in apprehending this gang. Accordingly, two suspects were initially taken into police custody, and during extensive questioning, information about gold chain snatchings that occurred in several areas, including Anguruwatota, was revealed to the police.
Those arrested are two individuals aged 23 and 30, residents of Alawmodara, Bahurupola, and Moratuwa areas, and a 34-year-old garage owner.
They have used an NS type motorcycle with altered license plates and color for their robberies. Investigations have confirmed that the motorcycle used for the robberies was very cleverly modified by using license plates and color-related parts from other motorcycles brought for repair due to technical faults to the 34-year-old suspect's garage, which was operated in the Egoda Uyana area of Moratuwa.
The activities of this criminal network are not limited to gold chain snatching alone. When the main suspect in the gold chain snatching was arrested, 10,240 milligrams of heroin were found in his possession, and when the garage owner was arrested, 5,050 milligrams of heroin were found with him by the police. Accordingly, the police suspect that these robberies may have been carried out with the aim of earning money for drug trafficking.
A more serious matter is that investigations have revealed this gang's involvement in a murder that occurred in the Kalutara North area. The police are currently conducting further extensive investigations into this matter and their other crimes.
The three arrested suspects, along with the motorcycle used for the robberies and the drugs, are scheduled to be produced before the Horana Magistrate's Court. Under the instructions of Anguruwatota Police Station OIC Chief Police Inspector Asanka Rajakaruna, Sub-Inspector Amila Weerasekara, Police Sergeant (35477) Lalith, Police Constable (99625) Abeykoon, Police Constable (102446) Dissanayake, Police Constable (102449) Madushan, and Woman Police Constable (13226) Chamodi are conducting further investigations into this incident.
