
An open verdict has been delivered at the post-mortem examination held regarding the death of former Hambantota Mayor, Mr. Eraj Fernando. The post-mortem was conducted yesterday by the Senior Judicial Medical Officer of Colombo, and samples taken from the body were ordered to be sent to the Government Analyst for further investigations and examinations.
The 61-year-old former mayor passed away on the morning of the 2nd, in a house on the eighth floor of an apartment complex located in the Thimbirigasyaya area. According to preliminary police investigations, it is suspected that he had hanged himself with a tie on a door near a room.
The other person residing in the house had left for the Hambantota area the previous day, and his attempt to contact Mr. Eraj Fernando the following morning was unsuccessful. Accordingly, he informed the house cleaner to go and check, and it was then that the woman discovered the body of the former mayor.
Police state that Mr. Eraj Fernando had died by hanging himself with a rubber strap on a door, approximately 9 feet high, in his house. At the time of his death, Mr. Eraj Fernando was living alone in the apartment, while his wife and two daughters were residing in Canada.
