Took a bribe from Sarana's wife, promising to ask the judge for a lenient punishment.

Colombo Chief Magistrate Asanga Bodaragama ordered the remand of a High Court judge's assistant until September 22. The assistant was accused of accepting a bribe of seven and a half lakh rupees from the wife of former Deputy Minister Sarana Gunawardena, by promising a lenient sentence in another bribery case against him. Sarana Gunawardena was convicted on 18 charges of vehicle misuse committed while serving as the Chairman of the Development Lotteries Board.

The suspect remanded was G.A. Charith Kumara. This order was issued after the suspect, who was arrested following an investigation based on a complaint made by a Colombo High Court judge to the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption, was produced before the court.

The Bribery Commission stated before the court that further investigations are being conducted regarding an officer of the Attanagalla Court and a bookbinder working at the Colombo High Court, who are suspected to be involved in this bribery incident. After considering all the facts presented, the Chief Magistrate ordered the remand of the suspect.
