The child is one year old - Warrants to arrest Chamika Karunaratne

Colombo Additional Magistrate Kasun Kanchana Dassanayake today (28) issued a warrant for the arrest and production of Sri Lankan cricketer Chamika Karunaratne for evading court in connection with a child maintenance case filed by a female pilot.

Ms. Sewwandi Senadheera, the pilot who filed this case, states that Chamika Karunaratne is the father of her child, Aryan Karunaratne, who was born a year ago on September 29, 2025, as a result of a close relationship they had around 2023. She claims that after she became pregnant, he avoided her and refused to accept paternity, and she is requesting the court to order the Registrar General to issue a birth certificate naming him as the child's father.

Although the complainant requested a blood sample from Chamika Karunaratne for a DNA test to confirm paternity, his lawyer, President's Counsel Jagath Wickramanayake, strongly objected to it. He argued that the court does not have the authority to obtain blood samples for such a test without a person's consent. However, President's Counsel Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe, appearing for the complainant, pointed out that the respondent had previously agreed to a DNA test in a statement given to the Women and Children's Bureau.

However, the Colombo District Court rejected the request for a DNA test order on August 4, stating that there was insufficient evidence, and ordered the relevant written submissions to be filed by May 13. The complainant pilot has since filed an appeal against the District Court's decision before the Colombo Civil Appellate High Court, and the case is scheduled to be called again on October 9.

It is noteworthy that the woman involved in this incident is a senior first officer pilot who operates aircraft such as the A320 and A330. Her sister is also a pilot.
In a video released on social media where she was dressed as a pilot, she advised the younger generation to believe in their dreams, work hard, and move forward with confidence, without letting anyone pull them back.
