Sri Lanka Cricket team records first victory in England tour

The Sri Lankan team managed to record their first victory in the fifth match of the England tour. The Sri Lankan team secured this victory by defeating England in the second One-Day International (ODI) cricket match held at Headingley Stadium in Leeds, thereby leveling the three-match ODI series at 1-1.

This victory was crucial for the Sri Lankan team, who had lost the T20 series 3-0 and suffered an 89-run defeat in the first ODI. Kusal Mendis returned to captaincy after recovering from a calf injury, while Wanindu Hasaranga was withdrawn from the entire ODI series due to a back injury and sent back to the island. Additionally, Eshan Malinga was added to the squad in place of Dushmantha Chameera.

After winning the toss and opting to bat first, the Sri Lankan team posted a strong total of 321 runs for 6 wickets at the end of their allotted 50 overs. After Pathum Nissanka was dismissed for 25 runs, Kamindu Mendis and Kusal Mendis joined forces, building a rapid 137-run partnership for the second wicket off 120 balls. Kusal Mendis, who benefited from a dropped catch by Gus Atkinson when he was on 18, scored his seventh ODI century off 82 balls and went on to make 121 runs from 121 balls, including 14 fours and 3 sixes.

Kamindu Mendis scored 54 runs, while in the final overs of the Sri Lankan innings, Pawan Rathnayake contributed 48 runs off 39 balls and Janith Liyanage scored 32 runs off 26 balls, boosting the team's total to 321. For England, Gus Atkinson and Rehan Ahmed each took 2 wickets. This total marked Sri Lanka's third-highest score against England in an ODI match.

Chasing a winning target of 322 runs, England's Tom Banton (73) and Ben Duckett (67) provided a strong opening partnership of 143 runs for the first wicket in 19.4 overs. As England seemed to be cruising towards victory, Dunith Wellalage managed to turn the tide of the match.

Wellalage dismissed Ben Duckett with a direct hit to the stumps from the fielder, and then dismantled England's top order by stumping Tom Banton and trapping Harry Brook leg before wicket for one run. Subsequently, Sachinda Colombage, playing in his maiden ODI, took the wicket of Joe Root, leaving England in trouble at 203 for 4 wickets.

Despite efforts by Jos Buttler, who scored 69 runs off 48 balls with 5 fours and 5 sixes, and Will Jacks, who made 52 runs, to bring England back into the game, Sri Lankan bowlers managed to restrict England's innings to 303 for 8 wickets at the end of 48.4 overs. Eshan Malinga took the wicket of Will Jacks, and in the final few overs, the Sri Lankan bowlers did not allow the English batsmen to score the required runs.

The final and third One-Day International match of the series, crucial for both teams, is scheduled to be held on September 27th at The Oval in London.
