A commotion in Hettiveediya due to a theft

A tense situation arose yesterday (24) in Hettiveediya, Colombo, between Maligawatta Police and local businessmen when police attempted to arrest a suspect in connection with the purchase of stolen jewelry. Senior police officers later arrived at the scene and intervened, successfully de-escalating the heated atmosphere.

The incident originated when a quantity of gold jewelry, stolen by an individual, was sold to a jewelry store in Hettiveediya. Maligawatta Police, conducting investigations by examining security camera footage, first arrested the suspect who committed the theft. Subsequently, police officers, accompanied by the suspect, went to the gold jewelry store and arrested the employee who had purchased the stolen goods while he was at another shop.

There, the shop owner protested against the arrest and removal of his employee, and simultaneously, owners and employees of nearby jewelry stores also gathered at the scene. Steps were taken to summon senior police officers to control the escalating tense situation, and the gathered businessmen dispersed after being promised that the law would be properly enforced in the future.
