There has been renewed intense discussion regarding the sudden departure of former First Lady Shiranthi Rajapaksa to Singapore, while she was scheduled to appear before the Police Financial Crimes Investigation Division (FCID) to give a statement concerning the controversial Siriliya account. She departed overseas early last Wednesday (September 16) from Katunayake International Airport on Singapore Airlines flight SQ 469, accompanied by Mrs. Anne de Livera, the mother of Mr. Rohitha Rajapaksa's wife.

The former First Lady, who had been receiving inpatient treatment for about a week at a private hospital in Colombo, arrived directly at the airport immediately after being discharged from the hospital. The summons for the statement was initially sent to Carlton House in Tangalle, and upon learning of her preparations to travel abroad, Financial Crimes Investigation officers arrived at the airport. There, just as she was about to board the plane, an officer from the Financial Crimes Division informed her about the summons, and a relative traveling with her accepted the document on her behalf.

Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa's media spokesperson, Attorney Manoj Gamage, held a special press conference to refute allegations that this trip was an attempt to evade the law. He stated that she traveled abroad solely for the purpose of seeking further medical treatment for her existing medical condition, and that she is currently admitted to Singapore's leading Mount Elizabeth Hospital, undergoing a special medical examination. He further added that the funds belonging to the Siriliya account, collected for the purchase of a PET scan machine, remain securely in the account without any reduction.

However, despite claims that she left the country for urgent medical treatment, several photos showing her engaging in shopping instead of receiving treatment surfaced on social media, drawing significant attention to the incident. The media spokesperson stated that she was scheduled to return to the island on the 19th and that necessary steps would be taken for her to appear before the Financial Crimes Investigation Division as scheduled on September 24th. Nevertheless, as of today (21st), despite the promised date having passed, she has not yet returned to the island, and she is scheduled to appear before the FCID on the upcoming 24th.
