The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has revealed that when they went to implement the travel ban imposed against former Deputy Minister Premalal Jayasekara of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP), he had already left the island. The CID has informed the Attorney General's Department that the former Deputy Minister had departed for Thailand on August 31st, prior to the imposition of the travel ban.

The Supreme Court ordered last Friday that a travel ban be imposed against Premalal Jayasekara and two others, and that they appear in court on October 21st. This order was issued by a three-member Supreme Court bench comprising Chief Justice Priyath Padman Surasena, Achala Wengappuli, and Gihan Kulatunga.

In connection with a shooting incident that occurred during an election rally organized in the Kahawatta area to support then-presidential candidate Maithripala Sirisena during the 2015 presidential election, Premalal Jayasekara, Sabaragamuwa Provincial Council member Nilantha Jayasinghe, and former Chairman of the Kahawatta Pradeshiya Sabha Wajira Darshana de Silva were sentenced to death by the Ratnapura High Court.

However, the Court of Appeal later took steps to acquit and release the three individuals from the relevant charges, against which the wife of the victim who died in the shooting, Mrs. Shantha Dodangoda, filed an appeal before the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court has taken this step while the said appeal is being considered.
