A recent survey has revealed that Peppa Pig, a famous British fictional character, makes a significant contribution to attracting international students from around the world to the United Kingdom for education. This research was conducted by Censuswide on behalf of the British Council.
The survey was conducted using a total of 2,500 students, with 500 students aged between 18 and 25 selected from each of the five main countries that send the most students to the United Kingdom: the United States, China, India, Pakistan, and Nigeria.Therein, 83 percent of the students who participated in the survey stated that British culture played an important role in their choice of a place to study abroad. Furthermore, 59 percent of students stated that fictional British characters had a strong influence on their decision. Of those influenced by fictional characters, 19 percent made their decision due to the children's television character Peppa Pig, created by British animators Neville Astley and Mark Baker in 2004. However, Harry Potter was the most popular choice among 22 percent of respondents, while 21 percent chose Mr. Bean, and another 21 percent chose James Bond. In addition, more than three-fifths of students (62 percent) stated that British music significantly influenced their decision. Among them, Ed Sheeran led with 18 percent of responses, while Dua Lipa, Coldplay, and Harry Styles were also among the most influential musicians.
58 percent of the surveyed students stated that British cultural icons had a strong influence on their decision to come, and the survey report indicates that Queen Elizabeth II was the most popular figure with 18 percent, followed by Princess Diana, Sir David Beckham, and King Charles III. Catriona McCarthy, Interim Director of Education at the British Council, points out that although the United Kingdom is renowned for the global reputation of its world-class degree courses and higher education institutions, this survey clearly demonstrates that British culture is also a huge factor in attracting international students. She further emphasized that in the current era of increasing competition, it is essential for the UK to create a culturally vibrant environment to attract the best students from around the world and maintain its position as a global leader in higher education.
