Namal is named as a 'suspect' in the Airbus aircraft bribery case

The Attorney General has instructed the Criminal Investigation Department to name Member of Parliament Namal Rajapaksa as a suspect in connection with the alleged bribery incident that occurred during the purchase of Airbus aircraft by SriLankan Airlines.

According to the investigations conducted so far, the main reason for this is the revelation that a portion of the bribe money received by Kapila Chandrasena, a key suspect in this case, was given to Mr. Namal Rajapaksa. Accordingly, following the Attorney General's instructions, a motion will be filed, the case will be called, and after reporting the facts to the Fort Magistrate's Court, Mr. Namal Rajapaksa is expected to be named as a suspect.

This case against Kapila Chandrasena, the former Chief Executive Officer of SriLankan Airlines, and his wife is already being heard before the Fort Magistrate's Court.

Mr. Namal Rajapaksa was recently arrested by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption on charges of accepting a bribe of 100 lakhs (10 million) rupees on several occasions in 2014 and 2015 during this aircraft deal. The court has ordered that the arrested Member of Parliament, Mr. Namal Rajapaksa, be remanded until the upcoming 18th. After being named as a suspect, criminal investigation officers will have the opportunity to question him extensively.
