A tragic murder incident was reported from the Rakwana area on the last Poya day. A 39-year-old mother of two, Ms. Nawalage Nadika Jayamali Wickramarathne, residing in Kandakumbura, Rakwana, was thus murdered.

Her death was caused by an inhumane assault allegedly carried out by her husband, who had returned home intoxicated. Police have confirmed that the suspect husband who carried out this assault is an individual serving at a sub-camp in Ratnapura, attached to the Civil Security Department.




On the 25th, the suspect had collected his monthly salary and returned home with fried rice from a hotel for dinner. Investigations have revealed that this assault occurred when an argument between him, who was intoxicated, and his wife escalated. Police suspect that he severely assaulted his wife's head and body with a coffee stick found in the house, and the alleged coffee stick used for the assault was also found in the house. Injuries were also observed on the deceased woman's body. However, the suspect told the police that during an argument between the two, he pushed his wife, and her head hit a bedpost, causing the accident.

After the assault, around 2:00 AM, when the suspect went to the room to check on her, he found his wife dead on the bed. He then informed the neighbors about this, and the neighbors reported it to the Rakwana Police and the emergency ambulance service. Acting on this, the police arrested the suspect husband in connection with the woman's death.




Pelmadulla Magistrate Mr. Tharindu Sameera de Silva visited the scene and conducted an on-site inspection. Subsequently, the Magistrate ordered the police to refer the body to Kahawatta Base Hospital for a post-mortem examination by a judicial medical officer and to submit a complete report to the court. The arrested suspect was scheduled to be produced before the Pelmadulla Magistrate's Court on the 27th. A team of officers from Rakwana Police is conducting further investigations into the matter under the supervision of Ratnapura Assistant Superintendent of Police Mr. S.D.P. Meegahapola.
