A monk was assaulted with a pole on Binara Poya day and hospitalized.

On the night of the last Binara Full Moon Poya day, Venerable Rupaha Pannadassa Thero, who resides at the Minneriya Mangala Bodhirajarama Temple, was assaulted with an iron rod by an unknown individual. Hospital police sources confirmed that due to this brutal assault, the injured Thero has currently been admitted to Polonnaruwa General Hospital for treatment.

According to preliminary investigations conducted by Minneriya Police, this unfortunate incident occurred within the temple premises, and the main reason for it was a financial dispute. When the Thero was being assaulted with the iron rod, several members of the temple's lay committee who intervened to prevent it also had a severe confrontation with the assailant at that time.

The police further stated that one person injured in that confrontation, as well as the main suspect who assaulted the Thero, are currently receiving inpatient treatment at Polonnaruwa General Hospital after sustaining injuries. Minneriya Police, who are conducting investigations into the incident, are currently taking steps to arrest the suspect and present him before the Hingurakgoda Magistrate's Court.
