Horana gold chain snatching gang caught with goods worth two million

Horana Headquarters Police successfully arrested four individuals, including two who were involved in snatching gold chains from women walking on the road, along with a stock of jewelry worth nearly two million rupees, on the 31st of last month. In addition to these suspects, two women have also been taken into police custody on charges of aiding and abetting the said crimes.

The arrested individuals are two young men, aged 23 and 25, residing in Anguruwatota, Naarthupana, and Horana, Bellapitiya, 35 Acres area. The other two women arrested with them have been identified as the mother and aunt of the suspects, aged 50 and 55 respectively.

At the time of the suspects' arrest, one of them had swallowed a stolen gold chain, which was later confirmed by a scan examination conducted after he was hospitalized. The police are currently making the necessary arrangements to retrieve the said piece of jewelry.

These robberies have been carried out for a week since the 25th of last month in Horana, Welikala, Batuwita, Dikhena, and Udawatta Road areas, and they had also snatched a gold chain from a pregnant mother. This gang, which terrorized the public by roaming the area on motorcycles with fake number plates, had two unsuccessful robbery attempts in the Moragahahena area. Two motorcycles purchased with money earned by pawning the stolen gold items through their mothers, and the motorcycle used for the crimes, have also been taken into police custody.

This raid was carried out based on confidential information received by Police Sergeant (14934) Janaka. Under the direction of Horana Headquarters Police Inspector Saman Rohana, Police Inspector Ranga Dissanayake, Sub-Inspector Gurusinghe, Police Sergeants Janaka (14934) and Mendis (70153), and Police Constables Saman (78834) and Lahiru (13022) conducted this investigation.
