Arrangements are being made for everyone to obtain a TIN number from November 01st.

The Department of Inland Revenue announces that from November 01, 2026, the submission of a valid Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN) will be mandatory for certain specific activities. This regulation will apply to eight main services that the public should pay special attention to.

Accordingly, the submission of a TIN is mandatory when opening a new account in a bank or financial institution, obtaining approval for building plans, registering a motor vehicle, and renewing a motor vehicle revenue license.

Furthermore, the Department of Inland Revenue's announcement states that providing this TIN is also mandatory when registering land or land titles, registering a business, transferring shares of a company registered in Sri Lanka, and obtaining credit cards. Before providing the relevant services, responsible officials must verify whether the submitted TIN is valid.

Individuals who have not yet obtained a Taxpayer Identification Number are advised to do so immediately. Applications can be made online through the Department of Inland Revenue's e-services system at https://eservices.ird.gov.lk/Registration/TINRegistration/ShowRequestHeader.
